1975…Headed to K.C. airport before cockcrow, from the Manhattan (Kansas) Holiday Inn, with blank stares we packed in to a station wagon. No one really wanted to go the 94 minutes to the airport, but we had to get to the next gig. Half asleep, and not sure which half, I pulled out of the parking lot, none of us having any 5 a.m. thoughts worth airing.
Suddenly, normally quiet Les sprang to animated life with shouts of :
“Pull over…! Pull the car over! Let me out! Let me out! Pull over..Stop the car!”
Thinking he had gone nuts and us not even out of the parking lot yet, we decided we would be better off without his exuberance breaking our predawn calm. He jumped out, and I resumed rolling slowly towards the distant destination, just in case he just kept running. But wait! He started climbing the Holiday Inn sign like a mad Spiderman, up to where the letters announced “Welcome, LEVIS”. His intensity for his mission made the band sleepily say in unison “.. what's… he ..going to …do?” We waited.
Maniacally moving the letters we thought he was mad… was a word spelled wrong? After a couple long minutes and quick moves, he climbed back down laughing, got in the car, and we headed on. We laughed over the next couple of years every time we thought about the Holiday Inn when folks saw the sign announcing:
