I want to ask John a questionPosted 08/14/2022 |
|
John, I have a question about rehearals in the garage in Long Beach in the late 1960s. A girlfriend of mine lived in the neighborhood. I have a story and question (NOT lurid--just about the people who played/sang with you there. I grew up in LB CA. Am now 68 years. Email will do. Best to you and yours. Be well. Peace.

My Mom and I came to your show at Cafe Wha on Dec 8 as a tribute to my departed Dad who cherished his Nitty Gritty t-shirt and your music. We had an amazing time and loved the stories and music you shared. Thank you and your compatriots for a lovely celebration.

Hey John,
My folks just got back from Paris and gave me the excellent gift, thank you so much! Also I really appreciated your input into the Duane Allman book, you have such an unclouded perspective on what was happening. I’d love to see you with David Bromberg, if not I hope I can watch a video!

Neglectful parentsPosted 11/14/2021 |
|
My parents drove from Dallas to Houston to see you last year and they didn’t even tell me they were going! I was quite upset at missing the opportunity, having been raised on the Circle album and all the classic NGDB records from my dad. I only recently learned to play your version of Soldier’s Joy, which was one of the first songs my dad taught me. However, my disappointment at missing your show was quenched when they pulled out a copy of your book that you’d signed and addressed to me. Just finished reading it and loved it! Quite a few nights of staying up way later than I should laughing at your shenanigans! If I ever get the opportunity to see you play live then I’ll ask you to sign it again to ensure it isn’t a forgery.
Fun fact- Circle album was how I was introduced to John Prine while in elementary school. I would later work for the company that did his sound for the last 17 years of his life and make memories with him and his music.
Hope to see you back in Texas soon!

Coffee Gallery ShowPosted 11/03/2021 |
|
Hello John, Thanks for putting on a great show last week at the Coffee Gallery and for answering my question about the concert at Birmingham High School way back when. Your book describes that event and your impression of Jim Morrison but you fleshed it out even more in your response. I'm really enjoying your CD Made in Brooklyn. Great songs. I encourage everyone to buy it. I look forward to seeing you in concert again.

Your Electra Guitar?Posted 07/02/2021 |
|
Hi John, I’m glad to see that you’ll be performing again. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard you play live. Recently, I bought an old 1980 Electra x960 with the built in effects modules. The owner was a guy named Scott Bain, who told me it was your guitar at one point. He says he was a teenager in Evergreen, CO and was going to buy an electric guitar. His dad told him to ask you for your opinion on his guitar purchase. He said he walked to your house and you told him his guitar choice was not good. He say’s that you went and got the Electra and gave it to him. He used it in his punk rock band and it’s been stored for 25 years. I just bought it and I’m still trying to get all the pickups and electronics to do what they are supposed to do. It is a beautiful playing guitar and I’m excited to record some music with it. Do you think this guitar was yours? Does the story sound familiar? I know St Louis Music did send many electra’s to well known musicians. And I’m pretty sure that you used to live in Evergreen. I’m in Basalt, CO so the guitar is still in Colorado.

Hi John - just finished your book and was happy to see you mention your being in Norfolk VA solo. That was my favorite concert ever - great showmanship and music. (Other two are John Hartford solo in Hampton VA and BB King with the whole band in Schenectady). In the spirit of your approach to Earl et. al., I want to pitch you my song

Stars and Stripes at CSULBPosted 05/27/2020 |
|
Many years after your days at McCabe's, LB, I taught banjo there, and lived directly across the street while attending CSULB. In about 1980, you were playing the CSULB bluegrass festival, and, I think, judging the competition, along with Jim Traub (Dynamite Gangbusters). A fellow local friend, Dave, accompanied me on tuba, for the banjo competition in a duet of Stars and Stripes Forever. Thanks for the prize Scruggs tuners! I can send you a link to a slide show recording of the rehearsal the night before. Let me know. Also, like many, I cut my bluegrass banjo teeth on the Circle LP. It's now the only vinyl I own. I still listen to certain cuts weekly, and never tire of it, even after over 45 years. God bless you for your inspiration. Eric

I remember sitting in the basement of the Astor Theater in Reading, PA in the late 70’s with you. You asked about the restroom and I had to tell you what I now know as the Mexican rule: If it’s yellow Let it mellow... I think it was more like “Don’t flush.” Period. Always loved your music no matter with who(m) or where. Take care. Oh, I’m watching Rocky Mountain Way Fiddlers Green Fogelberg tribute. So moving.

Chapter 11Posted 10/06/2019 |
|
John McEuen
I am currently reading “The Life I’ve Picked.
We recently met at your home on the Manatee River when I was working on your lawn mower. I have never been one who fawns over celebrity s, But I must admit that I am impressed with your performing Biography
The real point of this note is to tell you and Marilyn that chapter 11, The Red Brick Road, was some of the best writing on the difference between the U.S.A. and Socialism that I have seen in some time. I can only hope that the experience in Russia you describe will become more widespread before the U.S falls into a Socialist state.
I know it is old style but if you could make Chapter 11 available to a wider audience via the internet and social media it could be a factor in keeping us from going down that rat hole.
There are far too many people from Bernie Sanders age right on down to the UN-educated and misinformed preteens that believe that Socialism is the answer to all the ills one must endure in life.
I may have not known your music well, But I damn sure like your writing.

You guys were not just a Musical Performance, but between all of your GREAT singing, EXCELLENT MUSICIANSHIP, humorous stories, and JUST GREAT ENTERTAINING, the evening went by LIGHTNING-FAST!! People NEED JOY, COOL REAL MUSIC, AND HUMOR in their lives, and you guys are a Wonderful Crew of Pied Pipers!!!
