something worth knowing!Posted 04/07/2020 |

In 2008 we moved to an upper east side 6 floor building, fortunate to get (as everyone told us while moving in) an apartment they called “oh! The big one”. (1350 sq ft.?) Well, wanted to downsize anyway; but, one had to bring home a medium pizza, no room for a large. It was wonderful, and the family down the hall was the Tafoyas: head of house Dr. Mike Tafoya, wife Beatrice, and 3 cute little kids .. in a smaller place. Mike was just starting out in his medical career, eventually getting a clinic 6 blocks away, better than the Long Island commute he had for a while. Long hours are part of his life… now, longerthan ever. Now a medical director he oversees a number of clinics in upper Manhattan and the Bronx, he moved the family from 88th to be close to work, around 125th. Even on a regular day his team is regularly stretched thin. Now his teams are slammed, giving many of their patients the same diagnosis. And.. well they need to eat. With crowded waiting rooms and extremely sick patients pouring in, the staff has no time to figure out food. I am asking you to help a man I have always looked up to, has ALWAYS demonstrated concern for his passion (helping others), and is now bearing an overburdened work load. They are rationing COVID-19 tests (only 3 per day!), but wouldn’t it be great to eliminate food rationing for these guys . They – our front-line fighters in this battle – Dr. Mike’s various teams - need to eat… and not spend time looking for food! How long can a fireman fight when the hose is empty? He goes home occasionally where his middle daughter, Zara, recovers from the virus. But, the family keeps a ‘positive’ attitude as she recuperates. Their kids and their friends wanted to help out so they devised a plan to keep their dad and his overworked staff nourished for their work, overseen by their 14 yr old daughter Yvie. It is simple: https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/3gq930 Go there, buy a sandwich for one of the crew. Help Dr. Mike and his teams keep their ‘hoses full’ as they deal with the spreading fire of the virus. It is a small thing for you to do.. but not to them.

catching up!!Posted 01/30/2020 |

Mr. McEuen… you’re on! Going on stage with 55 years of music behind me, I still sometimes feel like I know 2 good songs, and wonder how I will fill the rest of the time! John Carter Cash told me once “my mom told me to ‘remember when you go out there, those people love you.. or they wouldn’t be there’” Well, I get to the spot on stage where I make most of “my living”, play my two songs while I try to figure what’s next. I start in to it, and the audience takes me to places I can describe to them with music and words. A couple of hours later we part company. Neither of us want to leave (the audience and me), but I’m tired and have head for bed. Taking John Cable onstage with me is quite a pleasure, for we’ve put in quite a few years on the road with music. He knows it all! And Matt? Wow.. no one knows more songs (Jimmy Ibboson and Jim Ratts come close), and he always comes up with something new. It is hard to believe the first time I stood on a stage with Les was 55 years ago…. I first met David Starr in Little Rock when, in the previous century, he talked me in to playing his music store in Arkansas.. it worked out great, and now he has a music store in Cedaredge, Colorado (Starr’s Guitars). I do shows at the Performing Arts Center right there in ‘his town’! We pack the house, and it is great fun! Marilyn shocked the audience when she came out to sing a couple of wonderful songs last time – it was hard to follow! But we did. Glenwood Springs’ Vaudeville Theater next night (a wonderful venue I hope to visit again) was another sellout (a week in advance!), and a great time in a lost in time venue. (He wants us back in April!) Again, Tom Spehar (bass) and David Starr (guitar, vocals) joined and Tom’s bass solo on Fingerbuster was great… worth the price of admission! Our Colorado Roadie – Tommy Young – Showed up to help out as usual. All in all, between my agency, friends, fans, occasional fairs, festivals, regular promoters, clubs… there are lots of cool gigs that come in front of me – like the Listening Room in Grand Rapids (April 2) or the Brown County Playhouse (Nashville, Ind., 4/3), or… Ludington, Mi. with Brad Lee at the Ludington Theater April 1 – no foolin.!! It is the best time of my career! I do what I want for people I want to play for, so if you are interested, call my booking agency: 615-321-6152 and

a couple of long time fans... comments like this really keep me going, and I am grateful there are so many like Dennis and Becky out there. It is from a show a couple of weeks ago: FAN COMMENTS Thank you and your fellow band members for an outstanding evening. John you truly are a different person than the one I spoke with in Fargo last fall, what a great change and it shows on stage. It was a unanimous decision that this show was the best we have seen NGDB or Yours. The energy level was great, All of you have worked to make the performance very tight and enjoyable. It is fun to sit in the audience and feel the positive energy from the stage. See you in Colorado. Our friends were blown away by every one on stage. Thanks for being you. Dennis & Becky

Thanks for all the nice blogs... finally got to them.. Spreading the word about the Franklin show May 19 and book signing in Cool Springs Barnes & Noble May 17 (6 PM). Help me spread that! Franklin Theatre has GREAT sound, which is now run by ex NGDB house sound mixer, Kyle Miller. When 'back in those days' with NGDB and Kyle imixing I always heard the MOST compliments about the sound.. be good to see him again, this great room, and perfect screen for projections. will be on lots of radio and t.v. shows too.. If you are in Nashville check me out on Earic Dahl's show, Bill Cody, Eddie Stubbs (WSM), WMOT and others The Life I've Picked is reaching a lot of people! 31 5-star reviews so far https://www.amazon.com/Life-Ive-Picked-Players-Journey/dp/1613738951/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1517343291&sr=8-1&keywords=the+life+I%27ve+Picked+john+mceuen

All is going great with the new shows!`Posted 01/08/2018 |
|
Last week of the year had packed audiences, and the response could not have been better! The guys all did great, and when we have it people love the film behind us. And a great thing is when we do not have the film it is a whole different and equally like show! Please help spread the word, and let me quote a FaceBook fan here: Will the Circle Be Unbroken being one of my favorite albums, I sacrificed a Sunday of football and went to a touted “multimedia event” celebrating it and 50 years of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band music. Expected it to be similar to the last time I saw George Jones, great stories from a crooner who heroically put on a show to the best of his ability. What a pleasant surprise to see that John McEuen probably hasn’t even hit his prime yet. John McEuen and The String Wizards is a phenomenal Mountain Bluegrass, Hill Music playing band. Easily one of the top 5 performances I have seen. Joe Mossback Albany, NY 11/20/17

Such a year already!! and more good stuff aheadPosted 03/20/2017 |
|
The Wintergrass Festival was killer, and lot of great things happened. January was complete success, with great crowds and perfect venues for my 'solo' shows. The NGDB shows were good too, and I look forward to the others changing the set we have done for the past 8 years, as I know people would like that. I wish NGDB would play a couple more songs from Circle or a few of the classic cool old NGDB songs, but that is not the way they want to do it. That makes it even more fun for my other shows, as I get to cover a lot of what I think of as 'missing' songs. Made in Brooklyn is still getting rave reviews, and I hope it becomes a "classic" like a lot of people are saying. One can hope. Things have never been better. My solo venues coming up are #1 halls, and Les Thompson, Matt Cartsonis, and John Cable are excited about more dates with together. Stay tuned!

E-Town in Boulder! Jan 22Posted 12/12/2016 |
|
Have been wanting to do Nick's show for years, and now with Made in Brooklyn out there it has come about.. a nice Colorado run .. Aspen with Bobby Mason on Thursday, Colorado Springs, Friday, E-Town Sunday.. Here is the Aspen and Co. Spgs. show: nitty gritty dirt band’s John McEuen and Will the Circle Be Unbroken McEuen has assembled a unique cast to share the music and memories of the landmark Will the Circle Be Unbroken album and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s incredible career. A multi-media show with archival photographs, film, Circle session photos, narrative and music of early NGDB (including 8mm footage from 1967) takes us on their incredible journey - all interwoven with Dirt Band favorites, hot bluegrass, rarely heard NGDB early classics, Carter Family music. A special part of the show covers NGDB’s 1977 Russia trip, and what happened behind the Iron Curtain for the first American band to tour there. The cast includes the following, all steller musicians in their own right: Les Thompson bass and vocals an original founding member of NGDB John Cable guitar/vocals also toured Russia as NGDB member. Matt Cartsonis vocals/mandola/guitar 20 year music partner with John When the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded the landmark 1972 release, Will the Circle Be Unbroken, initiated by founding member John McEuen, the icons of Bluegrass and Country convened: Roy Acuff, Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin, Earl Scruggs, Vassar Clements, and Maybelle Carter. Six August 1971 days produced the benchmark record that is relevant to this day (still an Amazon top-20 seller!. All join host John McEuen (with his banjo, guitar, fiddle and mandolin) as they share (in front of the screen) the hits that led up to this magic time when three generations came together, genres merged and came to life. The Library of Congress inducted the multi-platinum Circle album in 2004 as one of the most important American recordings. ‘Circle’ is also in the Grammy Hall of Fame. The evening ends the journey that has led to the creation of McEuen’s new highly praised release record - Made in Brooklyn - on Chesky Records. Closing the evening with encores of music from the new album, the audience will have seen the entire span of John McEuen’s 50 years in music and been taken back through some of the best years of their lives. “One of the most important records to come out of Nashville...” Chet Flippo Rolling Stone

Recording with the Oaks Ridge Boys Posted 10/29/2016 |
|
Recording with the Oaks Ridge Boys I asked the Oak Ridge Boys if they'd record with me and they said “yes!" Their enthusiasm was equal to mine. I showed up at the studio early in the AM to get ready. It seemed strange to see a band bus in the studio parking lot. It had been there most of the night. Well, surely they aren’t here this early, I thought. Wrong. Around 9AM, the Oaks came strolling in ready to sing (they had played the Illinois State Fair the night before and decided to just come to the studio; park the bus; sleep and wait for the session to begin). I was shocked they spent the night just to be at the studio to record with me. We recorded my arrangement of the classic "Sleepwalk," with my $15 lap slide guitar. My brother told me I "nailed it," and for once I felt I made that slide sing. The Oaks did such a fine job--complete with their renowned "do-wop" vocals. The track became one of my best recordings; I felt proud of this personal accomplishment and at the same time wish the NGDB had recorded it with me. The Oak Ridge Boys were a fine alternative. We also recorded an old country smash from 1953--the classic "Hey, Joe" (a Boudleaux Bryant song recorded by Carl Smith). I sang and played (fiddle/mando/guitar/banjo) and made a real country record with hot Nashville pickers! Country duo Moe Bandy and Joe Stampley were recording in the next studio over and overheard the rumblings echoing through the walls. One of them stuck their nose in while we were cutting. It was a day that I learned how important a "CLOSED SESSION" sign can be. I had been saving "Hey, Joe" for years (and for this ripe occasion), but Bandy and Stampley recorded their own version titled “Hey, Joe – Hey, Moe.” THEIR recording came out just two weeks later and charted before I could get mine off the press. So, I just kept it…

has been taking most of my time, and well worth it. And while it has been the toughest several months on the road in a long time, a lot is getting done, and the word is getting out. Many of the 'Brooklyn' album guest players have told me this is one of the best albums they have been on in quite a while, and I am more than grateful they jumped in to my music and made it come alive in such a special way. More later, but for now please check ot info on Made in Brooklyn, as it is my best ever I am being told.

back to the train this summer!Posted 03/25/2016 |

It is a great train ride if you have never done it. Up the mountain 2 hours, hang out at the summit for concert, back on the train for a bit under two hours (downhill is faster). Only difficulty is having to get from Beaver Creek the night before the first train show in time to be there for the 9 a.m. departure! Then the 2nd night I will also do a solo show in Del Norte; that info is on my calendar. That would be after the train ride/show,

Working with Jm Ibbotson.. and again in April!Posted 02/18/2016 |
|
Looks like Ibby and I will do a couple shows in April in Colorado.. Here are my ruminations about the trip last November.. I greatly look forward to it. from Nov. 2015: The much-anticipated Colorado duo shows Jim Ibbotson and John McEuen have come and gone. They lived up to my expectations and surpassed what I had hoped for. Like riding a mountain bike, Jim mounted up and took everyone away with his music and candor, as if he had been perfecting his performance since our last duo show 10 years ago. Two hours after first downbeat, we left the stage with the audience wanting more. After giving out a few more encore notes and words.. well, we sang, they sang, they clapped more - we left great memories behind, as well as rekindling some old ones. Ibby is one of the most talented people I have ever performed with, and it was great to regenerate some of that magic that people have told us we do. After extensive rehearsal of about 6 minutes, in Cedaredge we took the stage to a sold out audience. It felt as if very little time had passed since the last time. The beautiful drive over The Mesa led to Rifle’s Ute Theater the next night, also sold out in advance. It was even better. I am not sure Jim understands the impact his voice and delivery of a lyric has had on people, but it sure does. Many of his words have become part of people’s lives. The word ‘fan’? Well, maybe a better word could be found. Something broader than that, for it is from both sides of the stage that, as Ibby says “cathin’ fire from the fans in the front row” that shows we are also their fans. We were told people traveled from about 6 different states to see these shows, and I would like to thank all those who did come. It was even exciting to find out that we turned away about 300 people between the two shows… so maybe there’s more to do! I had two approving sons (my oldest Aaron, and youngest Nathan) show up, too, to see the guy who sang the music they grew up with. Their approval of what we did was great to hear. Sometimes it is hard to ‘put it all together’, life. Aaron is now a planetarium show producer and designing genius (shows in 14 countries – check out starlight-prod.com), and Nathan is a road musician (he had 3 shows in Colorado himself that week, and has a new album out this week), and I am still on the road dragging my banjo (guitar, mandolin, fiddle) around the country to find where some of the seeds I have planted over the years might have grown. They grew well this past weekend – we were told that between the two shows we turned away about 300 people. Have to catch us next time! Thank you David Starr (Starr’s Guitars in Cedaredge) and Donald Cheney (Ute Event Center in Rifle). See you all down the road. (check out syndicatednews.net when you have a chance. I have a fun interview there with Malcolm McDowell and others) John

Glenn is gone.. seems like just a year agoPosted 01/19/2016 |
|
I first heard Take it Easy on the radio.. To all the Eagle's family I send my regrets about the passing of Glenn. I remember first seeing him at the Troubadour in 1967 or '68 (they do blend together). Most of us all were under 23 years old, and EVERYONE was trying to figure out what to do. Longbranch Pennywhistle (Glenn and J.D. Souther) seemed to know already. When they played, sometimes to a 1/2 empty room those there knew: this should 'go national'. It did a few years later when Glenn and Henley (and Bernie and Randy) melded together all those Springfield, Poco, and other influences they brought to the mix to make 1971 their year. I remember when they were 'working it out' up in Aspen, the 2nd or third time the Dirt Band played up there. . . and it seems after that is when it all got under way for them. A few months later Jeff came over to my Idaho Springs house all excited about a new record he had heard on the radio. I had a 4-track tape deck, mics, and minimal gear. Jeff wanted to record a version of Take it Easy. It was burning up the airwaves, and the killer vocals were .... killer. We tried. I hope I erased that tape. We all know Glenn's music now. I have heard it sung by hundreds in Italian piazzas and crowds at the Spanish steps, groups singing with buskers, in Irish pubs with fiddlers, Florida with crabshack bar bands- those words that he (and J.D. and Don) put together back when they were ... as the press likes say ... nascent. We are all glad you did what you did, Glenn. Thanks for taking so many people in to your songs.

Have to go the day before show and get home late the day after. Three days for one show! but, it is Canada and those people will be happy to see us.

time to catch up on notes coming up. Slowed down a bit after Nashville as far as the road goes, but many things working that should make next year quite......... unusual.

working on it as I write. Looks like Ibby is excited to play in Colorado, and we are going to have a great time. Not sure of all the 'plans' yet, but might even have another show. Tough time to travel, but still looking forward to it.
